Descendants of Heymon Haim and Libby Hava (Berkowitz)
The Berkowitz family had its start in the Shetel of Eishyshok, which is near Vilner, Poland. Vilner is currently called Vilnius and is in Lithuania.
Of all the siblings, Harris, Sam and Rachel came to the United States. Marisha married and moved to Vilner where she Died during the Holocaust. Israel died as a partisan in the Eishyshok area during WW2.
Sam Berk, Harris Berkowitz, Rose and Hyman Balk, and Maurice Jacobs, son of Marisha and Jack / Jacob Yanklevich, all came to New York City boroughs Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Maurice had his name changed from Yanklevich to Jacobs on Ellis Island. He was a dressmaker and a union organizer. He moved from Brooklyn to Forest Hills Queens New York and was my grandfather.
Louis, son of Harris, moved to Springfield, Mass. The information on Louis's brothers seems to be in conflict. The 1900 and 1910 Census gives different names. One, Murray is not listed in either. From what I was told, Murray is the Oldest and Sol is the youngest. The information on Louis is complete as it was provided by the family of Louis.
Some of the Paikowsky family lives in Massachusetts and Israel. I am not sure of the rest of the family except that most of them died in WW2.
